Our Back-to-School campaign reminds us that along with pencils and paper, children need a daily supply of food to take on new concepts, run on playgrounds, and socialize more successfully.
Our Community Health and Agriculture Education teams have collaborated to develop the new Food Shuttle Academy, an online learning platform with free, self-paced lessons on health, nutrition, agriculture, and more!
Our Spring Match challenge, made possible by generous funders, including SOLV Energy and the Mead Family Foundation, exceeded the $105,000 goal, raising an additional $70,000 to erase hunger!
Love, Tito’s has a heart for community gardens and increasing access to fresh, healthy foods. Their philanthropic Love, Tito’s Block to Block program, reconnects neighborhoods and creates community gardens and farms throughout the United States. Our hearts are in full bloom knowing that our Camden Street Garden will be the next beneficiary of Block to Block, allowing neighbors with mobility challenges to access our many activities more easily.
What do plastic vegetables, 10,000 mosquito bites and glue sticks all have in common? During the week, all three are a big part of my day before 7 a.m. Having spent the last five years working as an outdoor educator, this is pretty normal stuff, but this time around, I’m adding a camera and a tripod into the mix—all with the goal of producing the Sprout Scouts Virtual Adventures digital learning series.
Education is a key component in the solution to hunger and the new digital education programs are a true expression of the Food Shuttle’s mission to pioneer innovative, transformative solutions designed to end hunger in our community. Concentrating on the areas of Community Health and Urban Agriculture, the Food Shuttle is expanding its reach to focus on one of the organization’s greatest strengths: education as a means of empowering people to overcome the burden of hunger.
The idea of gardening had occupied a tiny corner of my mind for quite some time, but the idea of growing my own “clean” organic vegetables did not come full circle until late fall and early winter of 2016. I was confronted with what could have become a serious physical challenge that turned my attention to eating organically.
In the interest of helping to care for our resident bees at the Food Shuttle’s Urban Learning Gardens, this past winter I and fellow Food Shuttle garden coordinator, Fern Hickey, took part in a beekeeping class with the Durham County Beekeeper’s Association.
Monday, June 17, is Nexstar Media’s 2019 Founder’s Day of Caring! To commemorate the holiday, CBS 17 employees spent their Monday donating their time and talent working in service to the community.
Our CBS 17 team worked with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in Durham, the Food Shuttle Farm in Raleigh and the Urban Ministry in Fayetteville.
Groups worked to support these worthy organizations by assembling and providing grocery bags for seniors, sorting food donations for Backpack Buddies which are filled with essential meals and snacks for children in need of emergency food relief, and helping the warehouse staff with food recovery sorting.
Another group of our adventurous CBS 17’ers went out on the farm and assisted farm staff pulling weeds, transplanting crops and preparing produce for distribution.
We at CBS 17 are proud to care about our community and encourage all businesses to consider a similar effort and come together for the greater good of the community in a tangible way.
The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and Alliance Medical Ministry share a special bond of a long partnership and a shared mission of looking comprehensively at a problem and determining holistic solutions. For the Food Shuttle, it’s hunger relief; for Alliance Medical Ministry, it’s healthcare. And as we all know, those often go hand in hand.
