FAERS Offers Healthy Outlook to Seniors with Type 2 Diabetes

Access to healthy food and nutrition education is often hard to come by for those in their golden years living in remote areas, but Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is stepping up to change all that. This month marked the well-received beginning of FAERS--the Food Access and Education for Rural Seniors—Program, facilitated by the Food Shuttle’s Senior Nutrition Programs, in Chatham and Johnston counties. In order to reduce perpetual disparities caused by systemic racism, the program focuses support to African-American and Hispanic seniors over the age of 60 living with Type 2 Diabetes and translates all materials for Spanish-speaking participants. Currently, FAERS supports dozens of participants and is working to recruit even more.

Cole Martin started volunteering with the Food Shuttle in August 2020, after his place of work, AECOM, put out a call to employees. He helped out on the Food Shuttle Farm for a day, enjoyed the time outdoors, and heard about the many programs of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. With a curiosity to see the various parts of the organization in action, he started signing up to help with different programs ranging from agriculture to food distribution.

11-Year-Old Lights the Way, Raising Over $1,450 for the Food Shuttle

In December 2020, young Eric made up his mind to hold a fundraiser selling luminarias to his neighbors in the Budleigh Neighborhood of central Raleigh. He expected to make “maybe 1 or 2 hundred dollars.” In the end, Eric raised $1,450 from his sale and donated the proceeds to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle “so that people can have some good food over Christmas.”

Thanks to the amazing support of generous donors to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle as 2020 drew to a close, those same families have the nutritious food they need to get through this trying time and beyond. To date, the Food Shuttle’s year-end campaign “You are the Heart of Our Community” donors have raised $379,731.95, and gifts continue to come in.
