Because of you, more children will start the school day ready to learn, without the pang of hunger as a distraction. Our Back-to-School campaign reminds us that along with pencils and paper, children need a daily supply of food to take on new concepts, run on playgrounds, and socialize more successfully.

Our Spring Match challenge, made possible by generous funders, including SOLV Energy and the Mead Family Foundation, exceeded the $105,000 goal, raising an additional $70,000 to erase hunger!

Love, Tito’s has a heart for community gardens and increasing access to fresh, healthy foods. Their philanthropic Love, Tito’s Block to Block program, reconnects neighborhoods and creates community gardens and farms throughout the United States. Our hearts are in full bloom knowing that our Camden Street Garden will be the next beneficiary of Block to Block, allowing neighbors with mobility challenges to access our many activities more easily.

Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market

IFFS Produce at Raleigh Farmers Markets!

The Food Shuttle Farm is entering the summer season, and cucumbers are bountiful, as are new potatoes and carrots! New this week: Pea shoots and water cress from our aquaponic system! Did you know that you can buy produce grown on our Raleigh Teaching Farm at two Raleigh farmers markets?  Come see us at the Midtown Farmers Market on Saturdays 8am-noon and the Downtown Raleigh Farmers Market 10am - 2pm on Wednesdays!

We grow local agricultural opportunities for our Young Farmer Training Program and community members in order to create a healthy and secure local food system. Revenues from our farm sales go to the teen apprentices and to fund Inter-Faith Food Shuttle's proactive hunger relief programs!

This week we have:

  • Basil – fresh summer flavor
  • Lettuce  Mix – Red and green leaf, very pretty and fresh. Spicy mix available, too!
  • Water cress – fresh from our aquaponic growing system!
  • Pea shoots – bumper crop, 3” tall
  • Tri-color Swiss Chard
  • Carrots – best in town!
  • New potatoes (amazing flavor)
  • Yellow Summer Squash – small and tender
  • We’ve also got
    • Transplants - tomato, pepper, and basil, grown in leaf  mold and worm casting
    • Soil amendments – red wrigglers to start your own vermicomposting worm bin, worm castings (black gold, the ultimate soil amendment!), and leaf mold (composted and pH neutral)

Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market

Raleigh Downtown Farmer's Market opened yesterday on City Plaza! The day was colder than the spring temperatures we've grown accustom to, but plenty of folks came out to enjoy the fresh produce from local vendors and bluegrass music from Old Habits.  The pitmaster himself, Ed Mitchell, was at the Market cooking up some 'cue for attendees, too! The Food Shuttle couldn't miss out on the festivities of opening day in downtown Raleigh, so the Communication Dept., Chef Terri and the Food Dude set up shop at the Market to spread awareness about our hunger relief efforts and promote the Plant A Row for the Hungry campaign!

We met great vendors and enjoyed talking with folks that stopped by our table to say hello! It's amazing to have the support of the community as we work together to drive hunger out of the Greater Triangle. We're grateful for the opportunity to spend the day beside Cloverfields Farm. The guys from Cloverfields Farm even donated 4 tomato plants to our Community Gardens!

The afternoon also brought an unexpected visit from IFFS Director of Nutrition Katherine Andrew and her new baby, Tatum! We were delighted to meet the Andrew's new bundle of joy, and it appears that Katherine has already started training Tatum to appreciate the local Farmers Market!

For those of you who couldn't make it to opening day, you won't want to miss another week of the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market! Inter-Faith Food Shuttle will be at the Downtown Raleigh Farmers Market on the 1st Wednesday of every month and we'll even accept donations of Plant A Row for the Hungryproduce.
