Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is a dedicated supporter of the Food Shuttle’s BackPack Buddies program. Every two weeks employees gather on site at their Durham campus to pack bags that go directly to kids in Durham County. We wanted to learn a little more about one of their employees who consistently goes above and beyond in her commitment to volunteering with Blue Cross NC and BackPack Buddies.
Name and Position:
Susan Riley, Project/Program Coordinator
What does it say about Blue Cross NC that they are willing to take on the fight against hunger in North Carolina?
A lot of goodness. I am proud that we are executing on our core values and strategy – one of which is Community Impact. “Partner with support and invest in communities across North Carolina to achieve the highest level of health for all people.”
Why would you tell someone to get involved with BackPack Buddies and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle?
I promote it all the time! I’ve had other groups I’m in (Positive Pulse and NextNet) come in to help for a session. It’s a great way to support the community through the BCBSNC goal of fighting food insecurity.
What does it mean that Blue Cross NC allows you to take time out of your day to volunteer?
I’m proud that the company I work for cares so much about the local community. It’s great to work for an organization that helps me fit giving back into my busy work schedule!
How does it improve office culture?
It provides perspective on issues other members in our community are suffering with.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Keep up the good work!
