Community Health Education Initiative Prepares to Launch "Spanish Family Kitchen" Video Series

In an effort to be more culturally inclusive and broaden the reach of the Community Health Education initiative, a “Spanish Family Kitchen” series is currently in the works. The series will not only be presented in the Spanish language, but will feature nutrition information, culturally familiar recipes, and activities relevant to the LatinX community. A summer launch is planned for the online series.

Jennifer Whitlock, Spaulding’s School Counselor, knew there had to be a better way to respond to the needs of the children under her care, while also addressing the issue of food waste. She turned to the Child Hunger Program team at Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, and it was determined that the solution the school was looking for was a School Pantry. The timing of this decision could not have been better as Whole Foods Market recently made a $20,000 in-kind gift to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle as an investment in several School Pantries in Wake and Durham counties.

In the Triangle area, Lutheran Services Carolinas (LSC) has stepped up to welcome 200 Afghan refugees and is in the process of securing for them homes and other necessities. When the enormity of the issue of providing food for these new members of the community became a reality, Chris McLaren, Outreach Coordinator for Refugee and Immigrant Services at LSC, reached out to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, and a natural partnership was formed.

For the last 16 years, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has partnered with Food Lion and the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to create a hunger free community in central North Carolina. This partnership has made a difference in the lives of neighbors throughout the region, as the grocery store chain and its charitable foundation have provided funding to a variety of Food Shuttle program initiatives over the course of the last year in excess of $75,000—and that support continues to grow.

Holiday Match Challenge Inspires Generosity and Brightens the Season for Families in Need

The fact is that one in seven North Carolinians face hunger on a daily basis and—for them—the holidays may provide little joy. For these neighbors, relief comes through a community of generous supporters who fund Inter-Faith Food Shuttle initiatives to end hunger. Now through December 31, through the You are the Heart of Our Community campaign, the impact of that support will be doubled thanks to a $100,000 Holiday Match Challenge funded by 4 Others Foundation and Oak Foundation.
