Glenwood Elementary's Food Drive Exceeds Expectations

Glenwood Elementary's Food Drive Exceeds Expectations

In the heart of Chapel Hill, Sheryl Kirkey, a dedicated 4th-grade teacher at Glenwood Elementary, was seeking opportunities to instill values of kindness and generosity in her students. She originally began seeking volunteer opportunities for her class to participate in at Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Due to the age of her students, they were unable to directly volunteer at our location, however Sheryl and her students found an alternative way to make an impact by organizing a school food drive in support of the Food Shuttle.

Because of you, more children will start the school day ready to learn, without the pang of hunger as a distraction. Our Back-to-School campaign reminds us that along with pencils and paper, children need a daily supply of food to take on new concepts, run on playgrounds, and socialize more successfully.

School Choice Pantries Help Erase Hunger This Back-to-School Season

As children return to the classroom, they should be able to focus on learning, not where their next meal might come from. Our programs provide them with food that is fresh, nutritious, and tailored to the unique needs of their families and communities, but we can’t do it without your help. Will you partner with us to erase hunger this back-to-school season?

Merck volunteer team breaks record at Child Food Hub

Ending hunger in our community is a group effort, but that doesn’t mean our volunteers can’t engage in a little friendly competition!

On July 20th, a team of fifteen volunteers from Merck pharmaceutical company arrived at the Child Food Hub in Durham to pack family meal boxes. These boxes provide meals to hungry families across seven counties in North Carolina. Learn more about volunteering at our Child Food Hub here.

When the volunteer team learned from staff that the record for family meal box packing was 421 boxes in one shift, they were immediately determined to break this record. They worked hard through the morning, filling box after box with nutritious food. At the end of their shift, they were proud to learn that they had packed 493 family meal boxes, beating the previous record by 72 boxes!

“The Merck volunteers were so efficient and kind,” shares Candace Burch, warehouse associate at the Child Food Hub. “We loved them and welcome them back any time!”

Thank you to the Merck team for a wonderful group packing event! We truly appreciate your enthusiasm and dedication and look forward to continuing this wonderful partnership.

Do you think your team has what it takes to break Merck’s record? Group volunteering events like this serve as wonderful team-building activities while also making a positive impact on our community.  Learn more about similar group volunteering opportunities here.
