SearStone Retirement Community Helps Stabilize At-risk Wake County Seniors

We are extremely grateful to the SearStone community for their steadfast support of our Grocery Bags for Seniors program in Wake County. This program assists our low-income elderly neighbors with door-to-door distribution of fresh & shelf-stable foods tuned to senior dietary requirements and engages participants in nutrition-education activities and training.

Each monthly bag provides 8-10 lbs of fresh & shelf-stable food direct to senior’s homes. These bags, curated for senior nutrition, encompass every MyPlate food group and include produce and/or recipe cards to assist participants in storing and preparing the fresh produce provided. Additionally, select sites receive nutrition education utilizing Seniors Eating Well curricula from Penn State extension.

Chasity Newkirk, Food Shuttle Senior Nutrition Programs Manager, says of the program: “Implementing Seniors Eating Well has been great so far. The participants like the chance to socialize, and that the presentations are tailored for seniors. They are enjoying enhancing their nutrition skills and knowledge.”

The Grocery Bags for Seniors program generates a lot of loyalty, from volunteers and funders who understand the need to take care of the generations that raised us. SearStone Retirement Community, in conjunction with Lutheran Services Carolinas, is one of those loyal donors—having provided grant funds in three consecutive years. We are grateful to have a partner whose priorities align so well with one of our most established programs. Thank you!
