A message from Jill Staton Bullard What a couple of weeks- cold, wet and icy, and here we are - snowed in again. I just had scrambled eggs for breakfast, with toast and coffee. How very fortunate I am and how very grateful I feel. But I know that there are 40,000+ seniors in the Triangle who might not be as fortunate as I am today. They are part of why we worked like crazy yesterday to get food to shelters serving the homeless, and grocery bags delivered to subsidized senior living centers. When extreme weather is coming, we concentrate on getting as much healthy food out to the most vulnerable, including our homebound seniors. As volunteer Gail Christensen points out, we do make a difference in many lives. Your support makes a difference! Thank you for making this work possible. -Jill HEAT or EAT? Thankfully, help is available. Seniors who don’t have enough to eat can receive nutritious food from our Mobile Markets and Grocery Bags for Seniors program. Watch as Florence tells you about the difference IFFS made at the senior living center she calls home: Building Community Through Food IFFS is launching a Learning Garden and the Seed To Supper beginner gardening program in a Southeast Raleigh food desert this Spring, thanks in large part to a seed grant from the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation. Katie Murray, IFFS Raleigh Food Security Coordinator, shares her insights and observations on how growing food builds community.
CJTP Grads Successfully Employed We’re proud that over 70% of our Culinary Job Training graduates are employed 18 months after graduation! Earning a living wage tackles one of the root causes of hunger (lack of income) and builds a self-sufficient community. So celebrate your next special occasion (or night off from cooking) at one of these locations, and support the success of our Culinary Job Training Program!
Volunteer Spotlight: An IFFS volunteer since 2003, Gail Christensen shares why she has driven trucks, answered phones, and helped with data entry for over a decade.
Even when the snow falls and the roads are slick, our Teaching Farm staff reports to work to care for our many chickens and goats. Enjoy some of the photos they took during our recent snowy weather.
Next time you get together with friends or family, please any crowd with one of these three delicious healthy snack alternatives: Black Bean Chili Dip, Mango Salsa, and Nachos!
