1 in 4 children in North Carolina are at risk of hunger. In the greater Triangle alone, that’s more than 119,000 children.
That’s a staggering statistic, but what does it really mean? What does hunger really look like in North Carolina? In America? In our own communities?
A Place at the Table is a powerful documentary that truly paints the picture of what it means to be food insecure – to not always know where your next meal will come from.
We believe hunger exists for two reasons: lack of income to purchase enough food and lack of access to fresh, healthy food. A Place at the Table clearly illustrates these root causes of hunger, featuring everyday people from all across the country, from all walks of life who struggle to put food on the table, including working folks who make too much to qualify for food stamps, yet not enough to feed their families.
It also highlights the consequences that chronic food insecurity can bring. Kids can't concentrate in school, making it harder for them to succeed. Adults turn to the cheapest source of calories available, filling up on processed foods lacking in nutrition and high in fat, sugar, and salt. Our hunger crisis is intrinsically tied to our obesity crisis.
Hunger may seem like an insurmountable problem, but we believe hunger IS fixable if we all work together – and that starts with getting informed.
