Grocery Store Tours Teach At Risk Families How to Shop Healthy On a Budget

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle brings its signature Cooking Matters at the Store nutrition education to 11 Food Lion stores in 7 counties on one day as part of Food Day 2013, October 24th, a nationwide celebration and grassroots movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.

WHAT:              For the first time ever, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle will be leading a multi-site nutrition education event across their 7-county service area at eleven Food Lion stores. Cooking Matters at the Store is a nutrition education program that helps families at risk for hunger make healthy and affordable choices at the supermarket. During Cooking Matters at the Store tours, participants practice key food shopping skills such as buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices, reading food labels, and identifying whole grain foods.  Participants will then complete a “$10 Challenge” to practice their new skills and purchase healthy items with a $10 Food Lion gift card.    Over 400 individuals from low income neighborhoods in seven counties are expected to participate.  The educational event is made possible by a $10,000 donation from Food Lion.

WHY:             As part of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s larger mission to end hunger in our community, IFFS Nutrition Education programs help build community health and fight hunger by bringing families together to eat, cook, share and move.  Programs teach how to purchase and prepare nutritious food on a limited budget.  This education also helps explain the link between hunger and obesity, which often results when the only food choices accessible by low income families are high fat/high sodium fast food and starches.  By emphasizing healthy low-cost ingredients and how to manage food resources, participants are empowered to meet their own food needs.

Food Day 2013 (www.FoodDay.org) is October 24th, 2013, and is a nationwide celebration and grassroots movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. Coordinated by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day events take place nationwide to advocate for improved nutrition and food safety policies.

Cooking Matters at the Store  is a program of Share Our Strength/No Kid Hungry (www.NoKidHungry.org), an organization dedicated to connecting kids in need with nutritious food and teaching their families how to cook healthy and affordable meals.  They also engage the public to make ending childhood hunger a national priority.

The program offers volunteer opportunities for individuals, corporate groups, college groups, social and faith-based groups. Volunteers for this event are needed for site coordinators, tour facilitators, tour assistants, and culinary trainers.  Sign up by contacting Sarah at Nutrition@FoodShuttle.org
