The Culinary Apprenticeship Program (CAP) trains individuals who are unemployed or underemployed by providing hands-on education and a paid work experience so that participants gain the skills required to pursue a career in the food industry; and as a result, providing them with the potential to obtain steady employment.
CAP is a tiered 20-25 hour, 12-week paid work experience that combines professional development with hands-on training in our commercial kitchen.
Students in Tier I gain skills and knowledge of:
Food safety and sanitation
Knife skills and familiarity with commercial equipment
Cooking techniques for soups and sauces
Life and employment skills
Catering - work alongside the Food Shuttle’s Horizon Catering and learn event prep, front-of-house administration, and serving
Graduates will exit Tier I of the program with in-demand knowledge, including ServSafe Food Handler Certification from the National Restaurant Association. The Food Shuttle will help graduates find meaningful jobs in the food industry. Students who are not ready for employment at the end of Tier 1 may be eligible for continued education in Tier II.
CAP Participation Requirements
Ability to commit for a duration of 12 weeks for an average of 20-25 hours each week
Desire to work in the food industry
Legally eligible to work in North Carolina
At least 18 years of age
Pass a drug test and participate in random screenings
Reside in stable living environments (shelters included)
Access to transportation
